It’s the time of year again that Santa and Rudolph (Santa’s reindeer) visit the houses of all the good kids while they’re asleep. They’ll be dropping off the ukuleles that the kids have asked for as Christmas presents. No doubt Santa’s elves will be listening on Christmas Day to make sure all kids are playing songs on their new ukuleles. So why not learn to play a couple of easy songs about Santa and Rudolph below.
Find the lyrics and chords to Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer here. It is easy to play, and uses the chords C, D7, F & G7.
To get an idea of how the song sounds take a look at the video in this post.
Find the chords & lyrics for ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’ here There are a few chords, but with a little practise it is easy to play. The chords are C, F, G7, Am, C7, G & D7.

Ukulele 4 Kids filmed James Hill sharing how to play the ukulele with chopsticks whilst in Porirua, New Zealand on the 13 March 2012, as part of the New Zealand International Arts Festival.
James Hill & Anne Davison performed Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean whilst in Porirua, New Zealand on the 13 March 2012, as part of the New Zealand International Arts Festival. In this video James talks about the different parts of how he plays the song on the ukulele, and is accompanied by Anne Davison on the cello. They do a great job together!
If you seen James play this before you’d be forgiven for thinking he may be using loops, but I can tell you from sat in the front row he plays all the different parts. Thanks to both of you for playing here in New Zealand.
The kids in my class at school thought it was great, and can’t wait to see the video I took where he uses chopsticks to play the ukulele – WOW!
In wishing to expand the features on the ukulele 4 kids website I’ve created a video page. To view all ukulele 4 kids videos just click on the videos tab and you’ll be taken to the videos page. There you will find all the performance videos made by ukulele 4 kids – happy viewing!
In response to the post I wrote about ukuleles at my son’s day care centre, I received a message from Doug Frink, a ukulele player from the USA. He shared with me a YouTube video he’d made about some ladybugs (ladybirds in NZ) on his property. My first impressions were favourable, but I needed an expert opinion. So I asked my son who is three years old, what he thought. He sat and watched engaged by the ladybugs on the screen and recognised a ukulele being played too. Good enough kid’s endorsement for me.
About the song and video that Doug wrote and filmed he shares, “I shot the footage at my property in the Sierra Nevada foothills, about 45 minutes NE of Marysville, California, USA. The ladybugs seem to gather every year in pretty much the exact same place. I think they may be getting ready for hibernation. They disperse sometime in the spring, but they seem to remain in the general vicinity throughout the summer. Sometimes on warm days the air is full of them fluttering around….it seemed like the ukulele and ladybugs would be a good mix, I’m pleased with how it turned out.”
Did you know, the entire life cycle of the ladybug is only 4 – 7 weeks. Starting the cycle as in the diagram below:
You can watch Doug’s video ‘Ladybug Philosophy’ here. Lyrics and chords coming soon.

We feature a fellow kid ukulele player across the ditch (the gap between New Zealand and Australia) in Tasmania (part of Australia). Her name is Jemimah and she is 12 years old. She is playing ‘When you wore a tulip’, by Jack Mahoney and Percy Weinrich written in 1914. I’m sure you’ll agree that she does a great job, and dad’s not too bad at singing either 😉
Jemimah’s dad hosts a website dedicated to ukulele playing, take the time to visit by clicking here. He is a very good player and featured on Uke Hunt’s post for this week.
View Jemimah and her dad playing ‘When You Wore a Tulip’ in the video below.
