Songsheet generator for Christmas

Posted by LearningwithZEAL on December 24, 2011
Posted in: reviews. Tagged: Christmas, music, New Zealand, Rudolph, Santa Claus, songsheet generator, uke4kids, ukulele, ukulele 4 kids. 1 Comment

What do you get a ukulele player for Christmas that isn’t a ukulele? Answer – a download of ‘Song-sheet Generator’.  It’s closely related to the program Chord Pro. I recently came across this super FREE little program that allows you to write down your songs, add chord diagrams, and produce songbooks. It’s available for download for both PC and Mac computers, and makes use of programs like notepad (PC) and TextEdit (Mac) both programs usually come free with your computer.

Song-sheet Generator’s main focus is the guitar but it also offers the facility to add chords for the ukulele too. It has a lot of chord shapes for the guitar already formatted, but for the ukulele you have to custom create your own. It’s not difficult to do, allowing you to create alternative fingering diagrams too. There is a online help guide, but I found it more helpful to copy it into a Word document to print. You can highlight the chorus in songs, and add the chord diagrams to a song-sheet. You can produce your song-sheet in a variety of ways, for instance, plain text or HTML files.

Here are a couple of examples of song sheets made using song-sheet generator:

‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’ & ‘Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer’.

In summary:

  • Is it worth downloading? – YES
  • Is it easy to use? – YES
  • Can kids use it? – YES
  • Is it free? – YES (But consider paying a small donation)
  • Where do I find out more about it? – By clicking here.

Enjoy your Christmas and may Santa and Rudolph bring you the new ukulele you have on your list.

Ladybugs, Doug and a ukulele.

In response to the post I wrote about ukuleles at my son’s day care centre, I received a message from Doug Frink, a ukulele player from the USA. He shared with me a YouTube video he’d made about some ladybugs (ladybirds in NZ) on his property. My first impressions were favourable, but I needed an expert opinion. So I asked my son who is three years old, what he thought. He sat and watched engaged by the ladybugs on the screen and recognised a ukulele being played too. Good enough kid’s endorsement for me.

About the song and video that Doug wrote and filmed he shares, “I shot the footage at my property in the Sierra Nevada foothills, about 45 minutes NE of Marysville, California, USA. The ladybugs seem to gather every year in pretty much the exact same place. I think they may be getting ready for hibernation. They disperse sometime in the spring, but they seem to remain in the general vicinity throughout the summer. Sometimes on warm days the air is full of them fluttering around….it seemed like the ukulele and ladybugs would be a good mix, I’m pleased with how it turned out.”

Did you know, the entire life cycle of the ladybug is only 4 – 7 weeks. Starting the cycle as in the diagram below:

You can watch Doug’s video ‘Ladybug Philosophy’ here. Lyrics and chords coming soon.

Playing Ukulele at Chelsea House

Posted by LearningwithZEAL on December 15, 2011

My son, Carter, goes to Chelsea House Early Childhood Centre in Raumati, and this week I visited my son’s centre to listen to him and his peers singing Christmas carols. I should have hidden from view of my son, as he wanted to spend his time with me instead of participating. My son is only three, so being strategic I pretended to go to the toilet so that I could watch out of his sight.

My son’s class teachers from room 5, Trish, Tracey and Charlotte and his class peers performed three songs:

  • Twinkle Little Star
  • I’m a Christmas Tree and
  • In the Jungle.

His teachers Trish and Tracey played ukuleles and Charlotte supported the kids with encouragement and actions. They all did a super job and all parents who turned up to watch thoroughly enjoyed it. It was great to see the ukulele being used.

The use of ukuleles being used by Chelsea House staff came about through staff interest in learning to play. So earlier this year staff were provided lessons by Jeff Gardiner, organised by Yvonne the Chelsea House Centre Director. I was lucky enough to be invited to come and watch a staff performance at the conclusion of their lessons. It was very good with a wide range of songs played.

This is just another example of kids being exposed to the wonderful instrument that is the ukulele.

When You Wore a Tulip by Jemimah (and her dad)

Posted by LearningwithZEAL on December 12, 2011

We feature a fellow kid ukulele player across the ditch (the gap between New Zealand and Australia) in Tasmania (part of Australia). Her name is Jemimah and she is 12 years old. She is playing ‘When you wore a tulip’, by Jack Mahoney and Percy Weinrich written in 1914. I’m sure you’ll agree that she does a great job, and dad’s not too bad at singing either 😉

Jemimah’s dad hosts a website dedicated to ukulele playing, take the time to visit by clicking here. He is a very good player and featured on Uke Hunt’s post for this week.

View Jemimah and her dad playing ‘When You Wore a Tulip’ in the video below.

10 good reasons to play your ukulele to an audience!

Posted by LearningwithZEAL on December 9, 2011
Posted in: Uncategorized. Tagged: Clive Madge, Coastlands, Hey soul sister, Kapiti, New Zealand, Paraparaumu, Richard Bamlett, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Spiderpig, surfin' USA, uke4kids, ukulele, ukulele 4 kids. Leave a comment

One of the ways to improve your ukulele playing is to play in front of others. Nobody wants to play their ukulele badly when playing to an audience. So here are ten good reasons, in no particular order, to play for others as suggested by kids:

  1. It provides an incentive to practise.
  2. You can tell if your playing was good by the applause you receive. If you get a standing ovation – wow!
  3. It can make your playing more popular
  4. It boosts your self esteem
  5. It makes you look cool
  6. It can give you a bigger profile
  7. A talent scout may pick you up
  8. Your confidence improves
  9. You inspire others to play
  10. You do it for the pleasure of sharing.

On Thursday the Kapiti Primary School senior and junior ukulele groups performed a range of songs at Coastlands Shopping Mall, Paraparaumu, New Zealand. The kids had a good time and a new audience to applaud them. They enjoyed playing and loved the ice-blocks they got at the end (REASON 11). View the photos of them performing below.
